Zombie Fluxx

Loy says: “Another cool entry in the Fluxx category. If you’re not familar with Fluxx, it’s a bizarre card game loosely based on rummy – you’re trying to create and lay down matching sets. However, the game rules, and even the conditions for winning, are played as cards during the game. And, changed just as often. Fluxx can last ten minutes or two hours depending on how you play, and is fun at any length. This one is Zombie-flavored.”

Pit!

Loy says: “Having been out of print for some time, it’s good to see Pit make a comeback! This has been a family favorite since some of our Game Guides were young’uns. In this game of trading, you try to collect a complete set before your opponents can do the same … but, you can’t see what anyone else is trading! Jumping up and down, waving wildly, and yelling yourself hoarse is half the fun. It’s easy to learn and play, loud, fun, and will get your blood pumping. It’s okay with three people, but you really need five to seven before this game shows its true worth. We have three copies; so expect lots of trade calling!”

Pandemic

We’d heard good things about Pandemic, so we tried it out at a game cafe and ended up buying our own copy. As scientists, each with a unique ability to bend specific rules, you race to contain a virus before epidemics take over the world. Similar to Forbidden Island as a cooperative game, and loosely following the geographic patterns of Risk, this one delves deeper into set collection and geographical problems. The virus spreads in somewhat predictable means, so you can make some plans, but occasionally outbreaks sneak up on your team. Another great cooperative game; the players work together to contain the virus.

From the box: “Four diseases have broken out in the world and it is up to a team of specialists in various fields to find cures for these diseases before mankind is wiped out. Players must work together playing to their characters’ strengths and planning their strategy of eradication before the diseases overwhelm the world with ever-increasing outbreaks. For example the Operation Specialist can build research stations which are needed to find cures for the diseases. The Scientist needs only 4 cards of a particular disease to cure it instead of the normal 5. But the diseases are out breaking fast and time is running out: the team must try to stem the tide of infection in diseased areas while also towards cures. Pandemic is a truly cooperative game where you all win or you all lose.”

Dominion (Card Game)

From the box: “You are a monarch, like your parents before you, a ruler of a small pleasant kingdom of rivers and evergreens. Unlike your parents, however, you have hopes and dreams. You want a bigger and more pleasant kingdom, with more rivers and a wider variety of trees. You want a Dominion. In all directions lie fiefs, freeholds, and feodum. All are small bits of land, controlled by petty lords and verging on anarchy. You will bring civilization to these people, uniting them under your banner. But wait. It must be something in the air, several other monarchs have had the exact same idea. You must race to get as much of the unclaimed land as possible, fending them off along the way. To do this you will hire minions, construct buildings, spruce up your castle, and fill the coffers of your treasury. Your parents wouldn’t be proud, but your grandparents, would be delighted.”

Ticket to Ride (North America)

Loy says: “Ticket to Ride is an addictive race to make the most profitable and longest train routes before your opponents do. The rules can be learned in five minutes, but gameplay itself is strategically challenging. Each player has a number of secret routes they are trying to establish, while blocking opponents from doing the same. Trains, cards, and routes have to be collected and set in matching colors, adding to the challenge. This is a family fun game that we love so much, we even play it on our phones.”

Tokaido

Loy says: “As a graphic designer myself, it’s been a while since I’ve seen a game that satisfies my need for eye candy. Tokaido satisfies and then some. It’s visually stunning and the clear, well-thought design makes learning the game a breeze. Winning it is another matter. As Japanese tourists, players travel the length of the board – in a distinct change of pace, they’re traveling as slowly as possible – and collect tchotchkes, photographs, and fine food along the way. At each stop, players can also choose to donate to temples and visit wild spaces for additional points. The winner is the tourist who has experienced the most that the game has to offer. With lots of combinations, this game is unique each time, and offers an interesting view of Japanese tourism. Our family enjoys the journey.”
